Great games indeed elusive! But I must say that I LOVE RE4, I know the story is full clichés and that it kinda strays away a bit from its predecessors. But the gameplay is just so god damn brilliant, and so is Leon ;)

i also like the resident evil series, and i liked re4 exactly _because_ it was different and tried to improve the gameplay, to make the game more modern. however, what's really starting to piss me off is that they either don't want or can't improve the movement/aiming part a bit, because that's the part that still feels like 1996 to me. maybe they kept it to enhance the feel of the game, because it forces you to aim carefully - you can't do much in terms of running away or circling your enemies. while that may have been a good idea for parts 1-4 (mostly fixed camera view, slow enemies except hunters and dogs), it has really become something of a chore for the over-the-shoulder cam games, at least for me, especially since the enemies generally got a big speed boost in parts 4 and 5. although chris does seem to be a bit more agile than leon (re4 --> re5), i still found myself outflanked by the townfolk numerous times, but not because i didn't notice that there was someone approaching from behind, but because turning and moving around still feels jerky as hell. i still think that this is something of a design choice, but, at least for me, it doesn't really add to the game experience in any way, it's just annoying, nothing else. this is something that also still gets me angry in metal gear solid, although it does seem to have improved a bit since mgs4 - keeping the aiming and movement parts separated instead of making them "flow" into each other, connecting them. maybe that's because they want to avoid giving their games too much of an fps-feel, i dunno.

that's actually something i liked about dead space - although it was in no way a great game, simply because of its blandness in almost every department (and because of the annoying health display on isaac's spine), they managed to make isaac more agile than his colleagues, in other words, i think that the controls felt more fluid and intuitive than this is the case in modern resident evil and metal gear games.

anyway - cool games, although i think that the series has gradually lost much of its charme since re2, trying to desperately cling to design choices made back in the nineties.

Wow. My list is so long, but I'll try to make it short:

Super Mario World

Pure platform perfection.

Half-Life 2

Wow! What can I say?

Metal Gear Solid 1 -4

Deep and complex story with some of the best cutscenes ever.

The Legend of Zelda ( Almost every instalment. Ocarina of Time as the best)

You can't find a better place to be in than the world of Hyrule

Star Wars: Dark Forces 2 - Jedi Knight

An FPS masterpiece. Very good level design with awesome FMV's, and also a very good story. This is the game that Lucas should have made a movie of.

Castlevania - Symphony of the Night

Read my review and you will understand :)

Metroid Prime

FPS + exploration = Fantastic

Resident Evil 2 and 4

Resident Evil 2 is a perfect example of how a horror game should be. Resident Evil 4 is not what I would call a traditional Resident Evil game, but it was the start of a whole new genre.

Final Fantasy VI, VII, VIII, IX

Squaresoft's epic games are undeniably some of the best RPG's ever created.

The Journeyman Project 2 - Buried in Time

A true point and click gem from 1995. You travel through time and space to find out who framed you for a crime you didn't commit. Awesome music and a fantastic story makes this a game, that you as a PC gamer, must have played.

Broken Sword - Shadow of the Templars

Just like Buried in Time, Broken Sword is a must play by PC gamers. It feature some of the best hand-drawn graphics I have ever seen and also a gameplay that sucks you in. Back that up with a great script and you're sold.

Phoenix Wright - Trials and Tribulations

The only DS game on my list. What makes Trials and Tribulations so good is the script and the music. The pace is also very good. If you like point and click adventures or just love games that have good stories, check this game out! Now!

My list is even longer, but it would take too much time to write them all down.

actually, i'd say that symphony of the night was the best castlevania game ever (i also liked the early platformers, but sotn simply has to offer more in terms of replay value). dunno why they _again_ develop a 3d castlevania after two failed experiments, they just won't learn ;)

aria of sorrow was also nice, but there simply wasn't as much to discover as in sotn

I don't see Final Fanatasy as a standard RPG. But more as a interactive movie.
Which almost goes for Mass Effect 2, too. Because basically you rush through the fights, hopeing for a cutscene or a new dialog, because those are the best i've ever seen - nothing gets closer than that.

[spoiler2]If you are scared your Shepard may die in the last Battle and he just makes it, there is nothing more emotional, besides having sex with Tali'Zorah.

Too bad they don't allow you to play with Ashley in the second part.[/spoiler2]

Wtf spoiler ain't working?!
